Selves in Series: Autofiction and the Issue of Seriality
“Selves in Series: Autofiction and the Issue of Seriality” questions the dynamics between the serial format and the autofictionality in self-writing. Its corpus includes three autofictional series and one stand-alone work: Outline trilogy (2014–2018) by Rachel Cusk, Scenes from Provincial Life trilogy (1997–2009) by J. M. Coetzee, The Golden Notebook (1962) by Doris Lessing, and A Dance to the Music of Time series (1951–1975) by Anthony Powell. More specifically, this project aims to discuss the impacts of seriality on the narrative structure and the production of self in autofictional texts as well as the cultural and historical conditions that serial autofiction is in dialogue with today.
